SNV started working in Kenya in 1967, with its presence legalised by a Host Country Agreement with the Government of Kenya.

Over the last 54 years, SNV has impacted the lives of millions of Kenyans living in poverty by helping them raise incomes and access basic services. To achieve this, SNV in Kenya adopted a market-based approach, deviating from the traditional development aid. The market-based approach is applied in all three sectors: Agriculture, Energy and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH).

To increase the effectiveness of the interventions and resources, we engage in partnerships with both the national and county governments, private and public sector organisations, civil society organisations, farmer groups and other NGOs.

At SNV, we believe that no one should live in poverty. We are driven by working efficiently through operational excellence to drive systems change by strengthening institutions and kickstarting markets. By this, individuals work their way out of poverty well beyond the scope of the projects we implement, giving them the freedom to pursue their own sustainable development
